Where do wintering migrant birds return to breed?
We need to understand where migrant birds return to breed, what routes they take, where they stop off to feed up and what routes they take to return to us. The use of geolocators to track birds on their migration and the use of satellite tags to do the same will help us answer this question. So far geolocators retrieved from woodcock tagged in Cornwall show birds flying back to Russia, Sweden and Belarus. The conservation of woodcock, like any migratory species, looks to be an international affair and so we need to engage with our partners to ensure a complete picture.
